A thick walled cylinder has a wall thickness to diameter ratio of greater than 0.1. In thick-walled cylinders the radial stress is significant. The circumferential, radial, and long stresses are the principal stresses. Unless external torsional shear stress is added, it is not necessary to use combined stress equations. The cases of main interest are those of internal or external pressure only, and these are shown in figures.
