2018-02-08
Objective:
This project will analyze the cost of hand blending apples to the commercial cost.
Non-Consumable Materials:
1.Immersion Hand Blender. Cost $40.00 US.
Consumable Materials:
1. Kiku apples #40 purchased at HEB at a cost per gram of $0.00482. These were deemed too expensive for apple sauce.
2. Premium Gala apples purchased at Costco at cost per gram of $0.0034. Purchsed in a 5.5 lbs container, Net Wt. 14 count
3. GoGo Apple Sauce. Purchased at Costco $10.00 for 20 single servings. 90 g per serving, which works out to $0.0056 per g.
Mayonnaise:
To make apple sauce peel and core apples. Then blend in hand blend until pureed.
Below is a comparison of 250 ml of hand made to commercial sauce.
Handmade Sauce | Commercial Sauce | $1.63 | $1.40 |
---|
Conclusion
GoGo apple sauce is 21% more expensive than handmade not including labour.
GoGo apple sauce is 16% cheaper than handmade when labour is included.
As with other costs analysis the cost of homemade stuff can save money if raw product is purchased at a good price and you do not include labor. Also, it must be noted the amount of wasteage is excessive and better coring/peeling technique will create additional savings.
